MTO WA MBU
Mto wa Mbu, a village lies close to the Lake Manyara entrance gate being one of the first cultural tourism sites developed by Tanzania Tourist Board and SNV situated on the foot of the great rift valley, bordering Lake Manyara National Park. This village sees a large volume of tourists and is known locally to be the only place in Tanzania where representatives of 120 Tanzania tribes do reside.
Mto wa Mbu (means mosquito river, mosquito creek), the name came into exist because if one spends a night there, no doubt with you on how it got its name hundreds to thousands of mosquitos whispering in the air in search of meals.
Being a small town and over 120 tribes do reside here each with its own background, the accelerating factor being setting up of irrigation systems.
A clutch of walking tours out of Mto wa Mbu have been set up as part of a cultural tourism program with the assistance of SNV.
The most of the interesting walks in this village are walking through the rice farms and the green closed papyrus lake tour to Miwaleni waterfall, papyrus lake tour brings you close to Irangi people who use to collect basket and mat weaving material from this destination. Other walking tour takes you to Balaa hill which gives you a breathtaking view over the village and the lake respectively and to Chaga farms (locals from Kilimanjaro region) and Maasai Bomas (Maasai People.)
As you can wish for a half-day to full day tours may be arranged/planned and handled in a respective manner. Plan a visit and mingle with Maasai people wandering around in their red, blue, checkered Robes/Shukas. Visit their Bomas and witness how women build Enkaji with a combination of grass, ash, poles, cow dung, urine and mud mingle with Hadza and get to see how fruits, tubers berries and honey are collected during the wet spells and how bows and arrows are used in procuring meat mostly during dry spells.
