LEMOSHO ROUTE (11DAYS/10NIGHTS)
This is the longest up Kilimanjaro, being lengthy, less traffic and also provides more acclimatization time than other routes. Its acclimatization duration contributes to it being the highest summit sickness rates a dream of every climbers is to make it to the UHURU PEAK. While climbing the route has beautiful scenery from the western approach, diverse views, making it a particular scenic route. Starting from a remote trailed and ascending through forest and heather for 2 days to reach the western edge of the great Shira plateau. This route continues up either the northern circuit, western breach or the Machame southern circuit route. Registration for the route is at LONDOROSSI GATE, with the trek itself beginning at the road head at LEMOSHO GLADES. Though during the wet spells vehicles often can’t reach the trail head and climbers begin the trek on 4x4 track. Distance from Arusha to Lemosho gate is about 130km and take 3 hours’ drive.
ITINERARY DETAILS
DAY 1
KIA-MOSHI/ARUSHA Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro international airport, you will be picked by a member of DASSIE SAFARIS and transferred by road to hotel or similar for dinner, an overnight bed and breakfast.
DAY 2
LONDOROSSI PARK GATE (2100m) to BIG TREE CAMP (2700m) After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, drive to Londorossi Park Gate for about 3 hours or more depends with the point you were picked from. Driving through the Shira Plateau is one of the best opportunities to see the big game on the mountain including zebras, giraffes etc. proceeds slowly while enjoying the scenic environment to BIG TREE (MTI MKUBWA) CAMP where you will spend your overnight. DAY 3
BIG TREE CAMP (2700m) to SHIRA 1 CAMP (3601m) After a warm breakfast at the camp, commence a short hike from BIG TREE CAMP TO SHIRA CAMP. Time taken for this hike is less than 5 hours but some rest is much required for adequate acclimatization. At this point the KIBO PEAK looms clearly commanding a panoramic view. To plant lovers and botanist hike through the MTI MKUBWA-SHIRA CAMP 1 passes through a moorland zone (lower) where the landscape is dotted by a variety of red and yellow and a mixture of colors of wild flowers and shrubs. Have lunch, rest waiting for the next day’s hike. Distance-± 7km Time-±4-5 hours Dinner and overnight stay at Shira 1 camp .
DAY 4
SHIRA 1 CAMP (3601m) to SHIRA 2 CAMP (3850m) Wake to breakfast, break camp, start a short hike to Shira 2 camp, where the trip takes an overall hiking distance of 10km and a total time of about 4-5 hours. This makes it a perfect day for the entire trekkers/hikers/climbers to acclimatize. Distance-± 10km Time-±4-5 hours Dinner and overnight stay at Shira 2 Camp
DAY 5
SHIRA 2 CAMP (3850m) to LAVA TOWER CAMP (4630m) to BARRANCO CAMP (3976m) The trip at this point covers an overall hiking distance of 10km taking you from about 8-9 hours long, on reaching the Barranco camp you will be at an altitude of 3976m. This point is somewhat difficult and is part of the toughest portion of the trip as some climbers may start to feel the changes as will be in high altitude areas. The changes being irritabilities, headaches and breathless symptoms though there will be well cared off by our guides. At this point picture lovers will have a nice opportunity for taking pictures of the western breach and the breach wall. Distance-± 10km Time-±8-9 hours Dinner and overnight stay at BARRANCO CAMP
DAY 6
BARRANCO CAMP (3976m) to KARANGA CAMP (3995m) The trip at this day and point covers an overall hiking distance of 5 km taking around 4-5 hours walk. On reaching the camp at an altitude of 3995m. After a hearty breakfast, leave Barranco camp for Karanga via the Barranco Wall which takes about 1-1 ½ hours. An ideal point for acclimatization. DAY 7
SHIRA 2 CAMP (3850m) to LAVA TOWER CAMP (4630m) to BARRANCO CAMP (3976m) After a warm breakfast, hike to Barafu Camp, later on embark to Karanga Camp for dinner and overnight stay. Acclimatization breaks are vital as they give you more than chances of reaching the mountains summit and fulfil your long-term dreams Distance-± 10km Time-±8-9 hours Dinner and overnight stay at BARAFU CAMP .
DAY 8
BARRANCO CAMP (4673m) to BARAFU CAMP The trip at this day 8 covers an overall distance of 5km and costs you about approximately 4-5 hours. On reaching the BARAFU CAMP you will be at an altitude of 4673m a.s.l. The landscape and terrain/geography of the area is not that fine, it’s a little bit dangerous as tents are pitched on narrow and stony environment but the location is rather safe and secure. Check the terrain of the area in advance and mark all of the points (familiarize). On reaching this point the Kibo Peak is not that far, as this commands the last ascent to the Africa’s highest point the same night. DAY 9
BARAFU CAMP (4673m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) to MWEKA CAMP (3068m) The trip at this point covers an overall hiking distance of 17km, and costs you approximately 15-16 hours and at this point you will be at an elevation/altitude of 4673m-5895m-3068m. You will rise around 2300hours, after a 4-5hours of rest, after having a hot tea with some snacks you engage summit attempt gear, shuffle off into the night. Summit point you will pass through heavy scree towards the Stella Point on the crater rim. On reaching Stella Point 5685m you will stop and take a short rest before proceeding to the summit, beautiful sunrise is sometimes encountered if weather conditions are clear. From there you will walk for a2 hours to UHURU PEAK the final point, here you are advised not to stay for so long as weather conditions, gases emitted aren’t safe for humans and staying for long will be extremely difficult to start again due to extreme cold and fatigue. Enjoy as much as you can this great day, a mark which will last in you for the rest of your life. Climbing down then follows from the UHURU PEAK to BARAFU CAMP, rest for a while, collect the rest of your gear then down to MWEKA CAMP. DAY 10
MWEKA CAMP (3068m) to MWEKA GATE (1640m) The trip takes an overall hiking distance of 10 km and costs you approximately 4-5hours and at this point you will be at lower altitude of below 2000m After a hearty breakfast, from the Mweka Gate, continue down to Mweka Village then drive to the hotel in Arusha/Moshi for a delicious hot lunch and a long overdue hot shower. Distance-± 10km Time-±4-5 hours Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel. DAY 11 ARUSHA/MOSHI-KIA After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight back home. End of service .
